It was a busy week for the NASA Astronaut Corps as Crew-11 took off to the International Space Station this week, where they will stay for the next 6-8 months.
Astronauts on the International Space Station
Nichole Ayers
Along with fellow Crew-10 crew members Nichole spent time this week preparing for the arrival of Crew-11. She started this preparation on Monday by cleaning her crew quarters ventilation system and airflow sensors while also configuring an extra sleep station in the Columbus laboratory module. On Tuesday, Nichole and Anne worked in the Columbus module by measuring electrical pulse signals on Nichole’s legs. Later in the day on Tuesday the Crew-10 crew checked out their pressure suits for their return next week. On Wednesday more preparation for their departure continued with Crew-10 packing up personal items inside Crew Dragon Endurance. Wednesday evening, Nichole and Takuya worked on biomedical research focused on blood flood in the shoulder and abdomen. On Saturday, Nichole was tasked with opening the ISS side hatch, allowing Crew-11 to enter the International Space Station.
Zena Cardman
It was possibly the most exciting week since becoming an astronaut for Zena Cardman as she launched and docked to the International Space Station this week. What was supposed to be a midday Thursday launch ended up happening on Friday after a cloud violated launch constraints. Nonetheless, Zena and her Crew-11 crewmates took their Crew Dragon Endeavour to the International Space Station flawlessly. After hatch opening on Saturday it can be assumed Zena got familiarized with the station and further took on her commander role of Crew-11 in preparing Endeavour for the long stay.
Mike Fincke
Mike took his fourth flight to space this week assisting fellow astronaut Zena Cardman as the pilot of Crew Dragon Endeavour. Last time Mike Fincke was on the International Space Station was in 2011. After a warm greeting on Saturday, Mike refamiliarized himself with station which has grown and matured since his last trip.
Jonny Kim
With about a month left before leaving the International Space Station, Jonny Kim spent Tuesday preparing for Crew-11 arrival by setting up supplies they will be using during their stay. On Wednesday, Jonny spent time preparing the four seats inside Crew-10 for their departure next week. With fellow Turtle, Zena Cardman on the way to the ISS, Jonny was fortunate enough to be the one monitoring Crew-11’s approach and rendezvous to the station. After their arrival Jonny welcomed his new crewmates into the station most likely showing them around.
Anne McClain
Anne worked hard this week on both Crew-11 preparation and science. She started Monday by setting up her sleeping bag inside her Crew Dragon Endurance where she will be sleeping until departure next week. Before setting up her sleeping bag she cleared out her crew quarters and cleaned the ventilation system and airflow sensors. Tuesday was filled with science as Anne worked with Nichole on muscle atrophy research. On Wednesday, Anne spent time with Jonny working on Dragon departure preparations. As Commander of Crew-10 Anne is tasked with the entire departure process and preparation. On Saturday, Anne was happy to great her fellow astronaut corps members as they made their way into the ISS.
